The Cookout: Just Beneath The Stars

Clyde Bowser walks in — if there were ever an excuse to change the expression from Cowboy to Cowman, this would be it: rodeo-competitor, former poker pro, co-owner of a wildlife sanctuary.

Clyde was born in Oklahoma. He split his youth between the L.A. jungle and tumbleweeds of Boley — one of the country’s oldest all-Black towns, home to the oldest Black community rodeo. Clyde roped semi-professionally with his daddy and his uncle from the time he could hold a rope. Supported his wife through vet school at the poker table, all with a few rug rats in tow. Now he wrangles spreadsheets and donations for the wildlife sanctuary ranch while his wife, the star vet, Angie runs the science and the mission.

In this one:

— The Netflix Truth About Jussie Smollett doc drops the same morning, and Mike makes the case

— Boley, Oklahoma and the oldest Black rodeo in the country

— Bass Reeves, big hats, and the wardrobe of a cowboy that stays clean

— A “friendly” private poker game with a royal flush that made the pot

— Cam asks the question of the whole episode

— Grey’s Anatomy (yes, really)

Referenced along the way: Boley Championship Rodeo, Cowboy Carter, and — allegedly — whale hunting.

A rootin’, tootin’ good time.
